Remove Background from an Image — Free On-Device AI

Photopik's background remover uses on-device machine learning to cut out the subject of your photo and export it as a transparent PNG — no account, no upload, and no waiting on a server queue. Two modes are available: Portrait, tuned for people, and General, which also recognizes animals, vehicles, and everyday objects.

How it works

A segmentation model runs locally in your browser, producing a soft, continuous mask rather than a hard cutout — meaning fine details like hair strands fade naturally instead of being cut with a jagged edge. Portrait mode is trained specifically on human subjects and gives the cleanest edges for people; General mode recognizes a broader set of subjects (including common animals and objects) at the cost of slightly less refined edges.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there two modes?+

Portrait mode is a specialized model trained only on human photos, so it gives excellent results for people but performs poorly on anything else. General mode recognizes a broader range of subjects — including animals and everyday objects — as a more versatile fallback.

Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?+

No. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using your device's own processor. Your photo is never sent anywhere.

What file format do I get back?+

A PNG file with a transparent background, ready to place over any new background or design.
